St. Patrick's Day

Back | Subscribe

St. Patrick's Day, a day Spokane becomes the Shamrock City instead of the Lilac City.  From the parade to beer gardens to bar hopping, Spokane has embraced this now secular holiday as one of its favorites. So who was this great man who inspired green beer?

Much of St. Patrick's life still remains a mystery. Many of the stories associated with St. Patrick, including the tale of his driving all the snakes from Ireland, are false, having been exaggerated through years of storytelling. It is known that St. Patrick, born as Maewyn in Britain, died on March 17 around 460 A.D. During his preachings it is told that he used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit could exist as separate elements of the same entity. He is also credited with the creation of the Celtic cross. He superimposed the sun, a powerful Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross, so that veneration of that symbol would seem more natural.
